The Alter Rebbe explains in further detail the generality of life in the world below.

If matters do not pertain to holiness, then the remainder of things that occur in this world will relate directly to the kelipah – the husk / shell / peel. This refers to level of impurity. There are three kelipot which are impure and then there is another which is neither here nor there. It can be elevated or cause things to be brought down. Most things in the general world relate to kelipah. It is rare to encounter revealed Godliness.

Whenever there is a feeling of being separate – that is exactly the kelipah which conceals Godliness. That is why most of this world is kelipah – because everything seems separate with its own existence – as if nothing else exists but it. But still – Godliness comes down through the multitude of contractions from the spiritual worlds to be vested within the physical world – through this kelipah. God reveals Himself – but in a backhanded manner. The animal soul is this kelipah nogah (the translucent – glowing shell/husk) which means we have the potential to work with it to elevate it or God forbid to allow it to bring us down.
