Value Another’s Money as Much as Your Own

Money

It’s been another tough week. I think I can say fairly honestly that I struggle to deal with the general Mediterranean way of thinking. I suppose in all honesty, it is also fair to say that some people are just more sensitive than others and one cannot make general statements. Having lived in Israel for many years already, I have seen some who are exceptional. Simply amazing! But for the most part, I have struggled immensely with the approach taken by others who seem to have little care for you, unless you are lying in a road bleeding after a terror attack – in which case there’s this sudden immense Ahavat Yisrael all over. I cannot understand this logic. It has given me enough cognitive dissonance that is simply impossible to deal with.

The Last Soviet Sofer – The Story of Dr Michael Khanin

Dr Michael Khanin

Dr Michael Khanin was the last Sofer to leave the USSR. He is also my teacher in learning about the very special profession and work of a Sofer. In this video, Dr Khanin shares with us his amazing story of how he came to be involved in Sofrut and his journey from the USSR to Israel. The viewer has the opportunity to also see him working through a variety of video clips shared in the video as well as a few individual pictures showing the quality of his beautiful writing.

It’s Time To Move Again – But How?

Kitchen

Don’t be fooled by the beautiful kitchen you see in the picture above. Living in Israel is for the most part nothing like this. We (those in Israel) live in most simple and humble apartments with barely enough space to swing a cat. There are of course some truly beautiful apartments for the super wealthy – and for some 7-10 million Shekels one can get quite a remarkable apartment! But when we speak about the “average” apartment – we mean pretty much the average box-like area most people will live in their entire lives.

Reflections on Our Disastrous Move – Now That It’s “Over”

Broken Home

Granted… our home doesn’t look like this… Well, if we had a home that was ours, I guess it might look like this. But, be that as it may, this last move definitely did something to us that no other move has done before.

How to Help Someone Move Apartments – and How Not to Help

Moving Boxes

Having recently moved yet again – with our move far from over, we encountered a lot of people wanting to “help”. Moving is, in fact, an extremely stressful event. I am far from over this move. With items broken and missing – it is like trying to have to start life again. Here are some tips for those who don’t move, who have never moved before, who won’t ever need to because of being able to own somewhere already. These tips are here to share what you can really do if you want to help… and some things that should sooner be avoided.

Our Shocking Move – We Have Landed – But What a Disaster – Totally Broken…

Disaster

One of the hardest things one can experience when moving is having to deal with the necessary time in closing off accounts at one apartment and then opening and changing accounts from previous owners in the new apartment one is moving into – into one’s own name. It is a full-time job which lasts roughly a week or two to make sure everything is taken care of. I don’t know how one does this and still manages to earn a living while one sits waiting on the phone for hours, faxing new forms and making sure everything is up to date on every side – both from the point of view of the old landlord as well as from the new landlord. As for ourselves, we are definitely falling and I just don’t know how to cope any longer!

A Week of Apartment Searching – and the Real Challenges of Finding an Apartment in Israel

Apartment

It’s been a really exhausting week for us! It’s been day and night searching for an apartment. Let me just share a little about what is involved – especially so at it relates to people like ourselves, and why it is not easy to find the right apartment.

Sofrut Lessons Continuing – Amidst Tremendous Stress

Stress

With less than a week to go – and no place on the map to move to yet, my stress levels are definitely the highest – I think – than they have ever been in my life before.
