Lessons in Tanya #44 – Chapter 21 – [The Words of God: United With Him Even After They Are Spoken]

Though it is that when a person speaks, his speech becomes detached from him – this is not so with regards to God. The words that God speaks remain attached to Him even after they “leave His lips”. It is because of this that the concept of existence is very different to the way we imagine it to be.

Everything is sustained by the word of God – meaning that the words of God – attached to Him as they are – bring all of reality into existence. As such, everything is always united with God. There is no separateness between God and creation – and certainly not between God and us.

If we take ourselves and imagine how we are one with our thoughts – then we have an idea of how it is also that God is one with His words (not only His thoughts). It is all the same to God. His words that bring all into existence are as much a part of Him as are His thoughts. That is what makes everything in creation One.

This is important for us to grasp, as it will have a bearing on our understanding that nothing can be separated from God ever. And if so, this brings into reality the importance of the first two of the Ten Commandments we discussed in the previous lesson. It is through understanding these commandments that we will come to realise that it is impossible for us to separate from God – and therefore it will become impossible for us to commit a sin when we realise that just as we would give up our lives rather than commit an act such as idolatry, so too should we be able to envision the “separation” we would cause if we are to commit any sin against God.

The Alter Rebbe is going to continue with this theme for a few more chapters, lengthening and expanding on this idea to help us grasp the concept of God’s unity and the importance of us being able to see this unity.
