Learn Talmud – Berachot #52 Daf 20a Part 2 / 20b Part 1 (Koren Talmud Bavli) [Conception In Purity]

Conception in Purity Lessons in Talmud Berachot

The Talmud tells us of two sages who involved themselves in the same thing – which by today’s standards may seem quite inappropriate.

Rav Giddel would sit at the gates of the Mikvaot and tell the women how to immerse. He says that the Yetzer Hara (evil inclination) had no effect on him with regards to this practice of his.

Rabbi Yochanan would do the same thing – claiming that when the women left the Mikvah after immersing, they would see him and as a result, they would be blessed with children like him [perhaps in physical beauty or perhaps in spiritual beauty]. Listen in to the lesson to find our more.

We begin a new Mishnah on page 20b. Women, servants and minors are exempt from reciting the Shema, from praying Shemoneh Esrei and from wearing Tefillin. They are obligated in prayer, Mezuzah and blessings after eating.

The Gemara does into a discussion regarding these various exemptions and obligations. Why are they exempt from the particular Mitzvot above and what types of obligations relate to them in terms of prayer?

Listen in to the Shiur to find our more about some of these exciting subjects!
