“I Am I. You Are You.”

Just four short words. Yet behind them lies a profound teaching about individuality, authenticity, self-respect and the courage to live as the person we were created to be.

The famous saying attributed to Rabbi Menachem Mendel of Kotzk, known as the Kotzker Rebbe, is commonly expressed as follows:

If I am I because I am I, and you are you because you are you, then I am I and you are you.

But if I am I because you are you, and you are you because I am I, then I am not I and you are not you.

What does this mean?

The Courage to Be Yourself

We live in a world filled with comparisons.

We compare our achievements, appearance, possessions, abilities and lifestyles with those of others. Sometimes we imitate people because we admire them. At other times, we allow the expectations and opinions of others to determine who we think we should become.

But the Kotzker Rebbe’s teaching challenges us to consider something deeper.

Who am I when I stop defining myself through somebody else?

If my identity depends entirely upon imitating another person, competing with him, or proving that I am different from him, then I am not truly living from within my own identity.

I am allowing somebody else to determine who I am.

But when I recognize my own personality, abilities, responsibilities and opportunities, I can begin to live with greater honesty and purpose.

And when you recognize yours, you can do the same.

I am I. You are you.

Neither of us needs to become a copy of the other.
